SECRET WEAPONS OF WWII: IMPRESSIONS, EXCLUSIVE FOOTAGE!

Hands-on time with the latest Battlefield 1942 expansion leaves us extremely impressed

17:31 Secret Weapons of World War II, the next expansion for Digital Illusions' Battlefield 1942, is only a month away: it's due September 5. Introducing new campaigns and battlefields to BF1942, the add-on will find combatants fighting in the likes of Prague, Norway, in a V2 research facility and at Hitler's Eagle's Nest retreat.
New troops and a new gameplay mode are also being included and, as you should know by now, some utterly bonkers vehicles.

With Secret Weapons of World War II so close, publisher EA has begun distributing final review code: "Plop" - that's the sound of code dropping on our desks. Hmm, there it is. Well in that case it would be rude not to play it, really...

Early impressions of Secret Weapons of World War II are extremely good, the expansion promising to be a valuable addition to Battlefield 1942, upping the game's fun factor considerably.

The new vehicles in particular - the American LVT-2 Water Buffalo amphibious vehicle, Allied F-85 Goblin fighterplane, the Allied Sherman tank carrying a T-34 Calliope rocket launcher and motorbike and sidecar were taken for a test drive - add both an extra dimension to the proceedings and a further tactical edge.

Not surprisingly, some of the new vehicles take a little getting used to, especially, we discovered, the Allied F-85 Goblin fighterplane. Highly manoeuvrable and sporting twin machine guns, it goes like a bat out of hell - a rather major switch from the sedate and graceful prop planes.

Check out our exclusive footage to witness one almighty, spectacular nose-dive into a hill. We're rather proud of it.

One minor grievance with the new vehicles is with the motorbike and sidecar - when you're on the bike in first-person mode, you have no arms or hands on the handlebars.

New levels appearing in the expansion are typically impressive affairs; the four we've played so far, Eagle's Nest, Essen, Hellendoorn and Peenemunde (pronouncements on a postcard), sporting the familiar combination of buildings and undulating landscape.

Bridges, both intact and destroyed, also featured heavily in three of the maps, these turning into choke points as Axis and Allied forces rained down shells, bullets and grenades and general death onto each other in an attempt to secure these strategically important positions.

Of course, it's in a situation such as this that amphibious vehicles come into their own. Loaded with troops, they can breach the river further up- or down-stream enabling squads to attack the flanks of the opposing force that holds the other side of the bridge.

And in some levels, you can board C-47 planes and parachute straight into enemy territory. Nice.

As you would expect, Battlefield 1942's core gameplay has been kept intact for the Secret Weapons of World War II expansion, although we've already seen one small alteration in class load-outs.

The Engineer, it appears, is in possession of new firepower, the British Army version of this class at least sporting a shotgun rather than a rifle. That, for us, is a welcome change.

So far so good then for the Secret Weapons of World War II expansion, and we'll be bringing further, more in-depth impressions soon. In the meantime, enjoy the exclusive screenshots (from Eagle's Nest and Peenemunde) and footage (from Eagle's Nest and Hellendoorn) we've taken for your perusal.

and you can't try to convince a 4' tall woman to suck your 8' tall wookiees dick, can you? and then almost get thrown out of your PA ....can you?

Think about it..... BF1942 is gay, no women in it....only men in uniforms...
i'm sure this refrain would fit very well with the game's spirit:

Played the demo but its just more of the same really. Not really enough there or enough different to warrant a purchase when there are mods out that change much more like Desert Combat.

I probably won't bother getting it, too many good free mods out for BF1942 to make it worthwhile paying for a handfull of new units and maps.

Don't play it on-line really, so will probably grab a *cough* evaluation copy for LAN action.
